Continuing with what appears to be a running theme of mine — writing about women on the fringes of society — I was commissioned to write a story for Radio 4’s Short Works series: set in Devon, it’s about a deer stalker tasked with a suspected unlicensed wild boar release on Dartmoor. I wanted to write something from the perspective of the people whose responsibility it often is to deal with these unlicensed releases. Regardless of whether or not they like that responsibility’s consequence in these instances, or whether they ultimately hope for a future in which these creatures exist in the wild, the buck often falls with them. The story is about rural ideologies, the many fors and againsts, and looking for balance in an environment that is intrinsically off-kilter.
