You mention Argento, but not the film of his which to me showed in 1985 the disgustingly explicit futu…re of horror: “Phenomena”, which culminates in Jennifer Connelly flailing about in a tank of rotting body parts, heads, gore and participatory vermin.

Also, you probably are aware of how the appearance of AIDS was followed by an upsurge in films associating sex with death, of which the Twilight franchise seems to be the most recent…not that the Eros/Thanatos pairing is completely new…
